Don’t Assume…

I have a message this World Mental Health Day. Don’t assume.

Don’t assume what people are going through,

Don’t assume that because they fake a smile they are “okay” now.

Don’t assume that other people will be there so you don’t have to be.

Don’t assume that because of someone’s job or position that they are automatically a caring person.

Don’t assume that your friend or co-worker would never suffer from a mental health issue.

Don’t assume you will never suffer from a mental health issue.

Don’t assume that because we are talking about it more that things are better for those who suffer.

Don’t assume one size fits all.

Don’t assume that your friend with depression wants to hear pointless statements such as “you just need to be happy.”

Don’t assume that your friend with anxiety can somehow switch their panic attacks on and off through choice.

Don’t assume that because you think your friend’s life is pretty perfect that they feel the same way.

Don’t assume that someone is better when every day they are fighting just to survive.
